Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, July 16, 2009 Reconstruction under arm asks

Q: Would reconstruction under arm be considered breast reconstruction???

I am a nine year survivor of breast cancer.  I had stage 3 and the tumor was under my right arm area.  The tumor was removed along with 21 lymph nodes.  I had 13 weeks of radiation and took tamoxifen for five years and now I'm on femera for five years.  My last dose of femera is on March 31, 2010.  I have developed a large cavity under my right arm and my right breast is smaller and a little flat on its right side.  Can this be fixed or should I just accept this as a side affect?  I am 62 years old but everyone thinks I look and act so much yournger.  People generally guess my age to be about 10 years younger than I am.  I have not consulted a doctor but have been thinking about this for a couple years.  Any help/wisdom you give to me will be greatly appreciated.

Hi - This is definitely something you should at least explore, if you're unhappy with how you look. It never hurts to feel good about yourself! Ask your oncologist to recommend a plastic surgeon for you, and make an appointment. He/she will examineyou and tell you what can be done. Good luck - PJH
