Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, August 13, 2009 Bettye Wilcox asks

Q: Recovery time and Suggestions for Aiding Recovery for Lumpectomy and Mammosite Brachytherapy

Just had Lumpectomy and will start Mammosite Brachytherapy in three days. Therapy will last for 5 days, 2x a day. So appreciate the experiences and advice of the many strong and compassionate women who  have been through these experiences. So much is given, I want to be able to give back too after my experience. Thanks for your help. Bettye

Hi Bettye - Hope you're feeling well after the lumpectomy. And good luck with MammoSite - please read our first-person account. That'll give you a good idea of what it's like. I think the main thing you'll deal with is fatigue - so be good to yourself, and let those around you, who want to help, take care of you. I hope things go well - PJH

PJ Thanks for your reply. I think I am doing well, this the first day after the surgery. Had my trial mammosite time today and will start the actual treatment on Monday.

I had a very large hematoma from the biopsy which required them to take more tissue than they had planned. They say I still have some fluid that they will have to check each day... I assume they could drain it if needed. I appreciate your support and encouragement. BettyeKiss

The day after I finished my bracytherapy, I travelled to New York state (about a 6   hour drive) for my great-niece and great-nephew's baptism. I wouldn't have missed that for anything. I had talked my radiation oncologist into starting my treatment on a Friday instead of waiting until Monday morning so I could travel on the following Friday. We drove home on Monday. I went back to work on Thursday of that week for four days. This was 4 weeks after my surgery. On Monday, I flew to Las Vegs for an eight day vacation that had been planned prior to my cancer diagnosis. I decided I wasn't going to let a little thing like cancer get in my way and ruin plans that had been made. I got a little tired but just rested when I needed to. The only thing I couldn't do on vacations was to go swiming because the incision from the bracytherapy was not yet fully healed. Good Luck and keep a positive attitude.

Karen: Thanks for your reply. Sounds like you had quite a different experience than Dani. What a wonderful thing for you!!! I hope that I don't have the energy loss downtime for a long time. I'm very active, playing golf, swimming, aerobics, and such normally. Can you tell me anything about how such activities will be affected?? Thanks. Bettye
