Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, November 06, 2008 eleonore asks

Q: 24mm, clear margins, sentinal nodes negative, IDC,triple negative - had surgery, what next?

I am 60 years old, feeling great and reluctant to have chemotherapy and radiation.

What are my chances of survival if I chose to rely upon lifestyle changes only?

How would this be improved by radiation only?

What if I only had chemotherapy?

What if I do both chemotherapy and radiation?

Too difficult to give statistics for all of those scenarios, Eleonore; your doctor should be able to fill you in, though. With stage 1 cancer, such as it seems you have, the statistics show, in general, that if you did radiation alone, you should have probably a 98% 5-year survival rate. That's the only stat I have... Best of luck - and ask your doctor for more info. PJH

Hello Eleonore--reading your concerns I'm wondering what did you decide?

I'm in a similar position as you were in last year,& the same age -- Had surgery, feel great, just had the news that I'm TN, now have to decide whether or not to have Chemotherapy + Radiotherapy, or not to have Chemo. & just have the Radiotherapy!

My BC nurse says its a personal preference, no right or wrong decision---I'm wondering about this!

Any thoughts from you & other women with the same concerns.

Hello Eleonore,

I'm in a similar position to you-- Post surgery I cannot decide whether  to have chemotherapy & radiotherapy or to just have radiotherapy.

My Oncologist says there's no right or wrong decision, whatever I decide is right for me!

I felt disappointed at this, I would have liked a bit more guidance!

You were making decisions a year ago I wonder what you decided? I would like to hear from you.

Hope you are well.
