Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, July 29, 2011 Kimmy1975 asks

Q: What exactly is a multiseptated nodule?

6 weeks ago I found a lump in my left breast at 2 O'clock. I've seen been for a Breast Ultra Sound. (I am going to write exactly what the doctor said). They found a "multiseptated nodule in left breast. Recommend a second ultra sound in 3 months". What exactly is that? They said I will go again in three months to see any changes and then have a biopsy performed. I can find a lot of information on Breast lumps but nothing that specifically explains a multiseptated nodule. The only history of Breast cancer in my family was my Aunt who sadly passed away from hers. She was diagnosed at around 38 but had waited around a years time to get it checked. She passed away at age 44 because it spread. Any information you can give me would be great!

Hi Kimmy - A multiseptated nodule is a growth comprised of numerous parts; think of it as "gnarly" rather than smooth. Cysts are often multiseptated; and this may be a cyst, but they couldn't quite say for sure - thus the 3-month wait, while they see if it changes.

This "watchful waiting" is pretty common, and it usually means they're not that worried about whatever it is being cancer - because if they were, they'd have you in for an immediate biopsy. So, try not to stress about this too much. But if you do find yourself becoming very worried, you can always ask for an immediate biopsy, to clear things up for sure. Not certain insurance would pay for it, since the doctor isn't recommending it at this point; but if you feel like you're unable to wait for 3 months, you can always ask if it's an option.

FYI, your aunt having breast cancer does raise your risk, but only by a very small amount. It's still much more likely that this growth is something other than cancer. Take care- PJH
