Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, February 03, 2010 flight-rn asks

Q: had a mammo today that turned into an ultrasound guided core bx of solid mass.

I am 45 y/o female G1P1 still with monthly cycles. No pain, no illness. They said that it is a solid mass about the size of a pea in the right breast. Positive doppler flow into mass. Is this cancer? I have to wait about five days for results of core bx. Lymph nodes in axilla are okay.

Well, you've done all the right things - mammogram and, once a lump was identified, a biopsy. There's no way to tell if a tumor is benign or cancerous ahead of the biopsy results. But, the statistics are on your side - about 80% to 85% of biopsies for breast lumps are NOT cancer. So hold onto that thought as you wait, OK? Best of luck - hope things turn out well for you. PJH

Waiting is always tough, because you imagine the worst. But hold onto that positive feeling, if you can. Worry accomplishes nothing - other than to make us feel bad! Be well - PJH
