Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 Lucy asks

Q: A lymph node showed up on mammo I feel this should be checked again in 6 months.

The mammo showed a lymph node, more pictures were taken and was

followed by an ultrasound.  I was told it was just a lymph node and

was nothing to to be concerned about.

Visited my doctor who said the same not to be concerned.  I asked if

I should have another mammo in 6 months she said it was not necessary

and that she would do a breast examination in a few months.

I have had breast cancer and I am concerned and feel it should be

monitored.  I live in Canada and if my doctor will not let me have another

mammo and says I should wait for a year I`m wondering if I should go

privately for hopefully peace of mind.  Maybe I am making too much out of

this but I am worried.  Thank you.

Hi Lucy - Since the doctor knows about your breast cancer history (right?), I'm sure (s)he is extra-careful about examining any changes in your breast. If the doc thinks you don't need to have another mammogram, then I'd say they've identified this as simply a lymph node, nothing more, and don't have any suspicion at all that it might be cancer.

That said - if you're stressed about this, and the stress will affect your health or life, then you should probably go private and get another mammogram in 6 months. There's more than one legitimate reason to have a mammogram; peace of mind is an important commodity.

Perhaps you should decide right now to have another mammogram in 6 months, to relieve your anxiety. Maybe, by the time 6 months rolls around, you'll no longer feel you need one. But in the meantime, you'll feel better. Good luck - PJH
