Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, August 15, 2008 Rebecca asks

Q: I have a painful breast just below the collar bone, im 17, could it be cancer?

Im 17 with no past history of cancer and no lumps but this breast is particularly painful. The other one is slightly tender but not to such a severity .It has been like that for a few days now and I am taking the pill and missed a couple. Could I be pregnant? Could it be cancer? Is is possible at my age?

Thanks Becky

Becky, it's possible - but you probably have more chance of being stuck by lightning. Breast cancer at your age is VERY VERY rare. It's much more likely that the pain is due to hormones, and your period. If the pain doesn't abate soon, or change along with your menstrual cycle, then I'd go to the doctor just to see if you could get something to make you more comfortable. And - kudos to you for recognizing breast changes. It's the best way we can protect ourselves from breast cancer, as we grow older. Good luck - PJH
