Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, February 05, 2009 iEtoile asks

Q: 15 yrs old. red painful lump on my left breast...HELP!

Okay, I have no idea what this is, and I'm almost sure it's not breast cancer since, as I've heard and read before it's extremely unlikely that a girl my age (15 years) should develop it ( I just want to check anyway, though). I don't think my family has a history of breast cancer, however, there are genetic "abnormailites", I guess would be a good way to say it. (My mother's breasts never fully developed, my Gynecologist thinks it might be part of my "deformity") Anyway, I've recently found a random red, pea-sized, sometimes-painful lump on my left breast, close to the nipple. What's going on?

You're right, breast cancer at your age wouldbe exceedingly unlikely - statistically speaking, your chance is 0%. You couls have a boil, a pimple, a small infection... perhaps an infected milk duct... Whatever, keep your eye on it. If it gets worse, or doesn't get better in several days, then I'd have it looked at. It's always a good idea to be watchful and diligent about anything happening with your breasts, OK? Good luck - PJH
