Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, November 23, 2009 Cando asks

Q: Edema as a side effect

HELP!  I have had sixteen treatments with Abraxane and eight treatments with Avastin in combination with the Abraxane.  I have tremendous swelling in my right arm which is not my breast cancer/lymph node surgery arm.  Is there anything I can do to reduce this swelling?  What doctor can treat this?  My oncologist just "tsks" and shakes his head telling me I have to deal with it.  I do not cook with or add salt to any of the foods I eat, and it is becoming a difficult situation to deal with.  I am scheduled for two more cycles of weekly treatment to bring the total to 24 treatments. Has someone found relief for this problem?

Hi - Even though it's in your "non-cancer" arm, I think you should be examined by a lymphedema specialist to see what's causing this, and what can be done. "Tsk, tsk..." isn't an aequate response. Please ask your oncologist (or failing that, someone from social services) to recommend a lymphedema specialist, who'll probably be a member of your hospital's physical therapy team. You can't alleviate this swelling with home remedies; you clearly need help. Unfortunately, it's up to you to be strong and advocate for yourself here, because otherwise it sounds like they're not going to address this issue. Good luck - PJH
