Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 YvyHoek asks

Q: My mom has Stage IV breast and long cancer, what can I expect?

Hi there,

I'm asking this question because unfortunately my mom is diagnosed with breast and long cancer Stage IV and she lives in Europe and I live in the US. Due to immigration issues I can't visit her the next coming 3 months.

She has had breast cancer 3 years ago and it went away with chemo, lumpectomie and radiation. Now it's back in her breast, lung, skin and other breast (while undergoing chemo). The docters told her that the chemo isn't working and they don.t have an explanation why a new cancer developed while she's undergoing chemo. If the next chemo with different chemicals does not work, they don't know what to do anymore.

I know it's hard to tell, but any advise will be greatly appreciated. What can I expect with her to happen? Does she have months or maybe a few years? What will she experience, will she be in a lot of pain?

Thank you all very much!

Yvette

Yvette, I'm sorry to hear that your mother's breast cancer has spread.  One important point to clear up is whether she has breast cancer that has spread to her lungs or whether she has lung cancer--a new cancer that started in her lung, not in her breast.  If she has lung cancer, there are different drugs used to treat it than if she has breast cancer that has spread to her lungs.

It's impossible to predict what will happen.  These days some people live a long time with breast cancer that has spread to the other organs.  I heard just the other day from a woman who was first diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago, with a spread of the breast cancer to her bones six years ago, and another spread of the breast cancer to her lungs three years ago.  She lives an active life, playing golf and getting regular treatments to keep the cancer under control.

However, a spread of breast cancer to her lungs is a serious development, and you are justified in being very concerned.  I hope the next drug the doctors try stops the spread of the cancer.  She might want to see if there are any clinical trials of new drugs for her to try.
