I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with an oncologist.  Like any group of people some are less ethical and/or forthright than others.  As a person who is alive because of chemotherapy, I can only be glad that an oncologist was there when I needed one, and that researchers used their knowledge and skills to try out different medicines and dosages.

Like Phyllis and many, many others I too am alive thanks to cytotoxins. I feel I must also speak up on behalf of my own oncologist, whom I have found to be the most caring medical man I have ever met. I will be forever grateful to him.

Perhaps you need to tell your story to express your anger and find some help and consolation if possible.

I'll tell you that with my first cancer I went through chemo and thought I was fine until my plastic surgeon found a recurrent tumor in my chest wall 3 years later.  I loved my original oncologist, and my radiation oncologist was great as well - but when it came time to find out what to do after radiation I had a hard time with oncologist.  The first originally said no chemo was needed but then changed his mind.  I stood my stance for quite a while because I really didn't want that poison in me again - but then again my situation is different than most.  I knew chemo wasn't needed as I had no evidence of it spreading anywhere and my chest wall and arm pit had radiation to prevent it from coming back there.  I knew I only needed hormone therapy.  Well I agreed to finially do chemo then he tells me it would be 6 months.  Obviously I was not happy cause the longer the chemo takes, the longer I have to wait for reconstruction surgery - so in reality I would be waiting at least a year,  So I sought out a new oncologist and he validated every point I had.  He ran a PET scan and it was all clear so we just moved on to hormone therapy.  The key truly is finding the RIGHT oncologist - educate yourself, speak your mind, talk about your options and decided as a team.  It is your body and you do not have to do everything anyone tells you to do, yet at the same time you do need to do what is necessary to keep cancer at bay.

Good luck!

How do you know you were cured? If you had nothing to begin with, than you'd just be believing some abstract allegation that you never have the capacity to know if they were lying or not about. You do realize they make a lot of money by treating patients, and they also get subsidized to train students and to sell new drugs. There's a lot of conflicts of interest involved that you're probably unaware of. And there are some that say that you either have cancer or you don't, and that it's only a theory that you can treat some cancers.

I've been around a lot of health care professionals, and I've found them to be devoted to their work - helping their patients feel better. Perhaps you've had a bad experience (or more than one) with doctors or nurses or surgeons, but I've had predominatly GREAT experiences with these talented, generous people - for which I'm thankful.
