Yesterday, a woman wrote that her radiologist oncologist total her -her real rate of recurrence would be the Oncotype DX distant recurrence rate added to the general public rate of developing cancer which would be 14%.  That raise alot of questions.  I did not realise that the two probabilities could be added together to determine the recurrence rate of breast cancer?  Your thoughts....

Well, that's a new one for me. I've read a lot about Oncotype, and have never heard this. And honestly, I don't think I believe it... Too many variables, too many unknowns, and it just can't be that simple (for instance, which "general public" rate? Lifetime? Age-specific? Relative vs. absolute?) Perhaps she misunderstood? If you're wondering about recurrence, please ask your own oncologist, as only s/he has all the details about your diagnosis necessary to provide a good, informed estimate. Good luck - PJH
