Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, July 07, 2008 jbarlow asks

Q: I've had purplish rash on my breast for 7 months that won't go away with antibiotics now with lump 2

My rash with scab appeared 7 months ago it was purple and red. Then a month ago a lump appeared close to it. I've actually had two rounds of anitbiotics, have tried creams and changing everything that is near my breast skin (detergents and etc.) nothing has changed it. What could this be?

Hi J: 7 months is an awfully long time for this to be going on... There's a rare type of breast cancer, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, that has symptoms similar to this, but I'd think it would have progressed beyond what you describe over 7 months; it's usually quite fast-acting. I'd bring IBC up with your doctor, though, and if he/she doesn't know anything about it, ask to see an oncologist or someone who can rule this out for you. Hope you figure out what's causing these symptoms so you can deal with it and feel better! - PJH
