Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, December 16, 2010 danielle asks

Q: I had an MRI prior to my lumpectomy and they found a couple of areas of concern, one on the other breast.

The surgeon wants me to have an ultrasound and if they see the lumps have them aspirated, otherwise he wants to do an MRI guided core biopsy if the ultrasound shows nothing.  Does this make sense?  I don't want to go through a core biopsy for nothing

Yes, Danielle, it makes sense. Unfortunately, MRIs yield up to 50% false positives - they identify areas of concern, and about 50% of the time they turn out to be nothing. But if an ultrasound doesn't clearly show a cyst, then the only way you'll know which of those 50% segments you're in (benign vs. malignant) is another biopsy. Sorry about that, but your surgeon is right... PJH
