Both my surgeon & oncologist have told me that I should start chemo soon due to the fact that I still have 2 satellite lesions near my recent surgery site (I had a lumpectomy that didn't come back with clean margins).  One option was a mascetomy, but both drs are worried since the cancer did spread to my lymph nodes (the count was more than 10 nodes), that there is a possiblity it may spread again.  So, I think that is why they chose to do chemo first, do another breast mri to make sure the chemo is working, & then if it is, continue treatment.  After treatment, they plan to do another lumpectomy to remove the dead tumor.  Honestly, I am glad that things are moving along, but I want to be sure that after all this - I am cancer free!

Sharla, you say the surgeons want to do a lumpectomy after the chemo. So I'm not quite sure why you're mentioning a mastectomy. Having a mastectomy would, of course, lessen your chance of a recurrence in the breast. But since the cancer has spread out of the breast, there's no way, unfortunately, to guarantee it won't come back. Chemo will definitely help - but as I said, no guarantee you're cancer free. If you're hormone receptive, then you'll also take long-term drugs, and that'll help, too. Treatment is getting better and better all the time. So - go through treatment, stay positive, take the drugs as directed, and live your life. Worry doesn't accomplish anything. Best of luck to you - and stay connected here, OK? - PJH

hello sharla, have your drs mentioned any radiation treatments for the lesions and nodes.

a mas will definetly lessen the chance of recurrance in the breast scar tissue which is where it would most likely recur. i would definetly ask your drs to relay ALL your treatment options before you make your decisions. write down all your questions and concerns and drop them off to the office before your next appointment this will prepare your drs. prior to seeing you.
