I need to get a mri guided breast biopsy? Can someone tell me more about this procedure?
During a breast mri, they found something suspicious in my right breast. They could not find it with ultrasound, so I have to get a mri guided breast biopsy. What does this involve?
Hi Sharla - this is simply another way of doing a typical breast biopsy. It's often used when the area in question doesn't show up well on a mammogram. Here's what the Mayo Clinic says:
"Guided by MR imaging, the doctor places a needle into the suspicious area and removes a sample. A core needle, which removes a small, cylindrical-shaped tissue sample, is used. The procedure requires only a topical anesthetic and leaves little to no scarring. MR-guided breast biopsy costs less than a surgical biopsy, can be done in less than an hour and has no potential complications."
