I wanted more info on the triple negative and any successful treatments there are out there.  I was diagnosed last year in May and completed chemo & radiation.  I did have to take a break from chemo due to a flare up of hep b.  I completed radiation while on a break from chemo and completed chemo in april.  Had a mastectomy in which they found a new tumor in my armpit.  Had a PET scan done which showed metastasis in the spine, femur, pelvic bone, sternum, liver.  I don't understand why chemo or radiation did not do its job!  The doctor is telling me to fly to the mainland to get a second opinion and possible treatment.  What now?

Sharla, I'm sorry treatment didn't work well for you - triple-negative breast cancer is a tough one. As you've discovered, chemo and radiaiton don't always work, and they're the first/best line of defense. If I were you, I'd ask about the drug Avastin - it's just recently been approved for treating triple-negative breast cancer, especially advanced cases such as yours. Please ask your oncologist about this. And stay in touch here - we can help you through this. Good luck - PJH

I did ask my oncologist about this and he states that Avastin is used in conjunction with other chemotherapy treatments.  Is there any way that I can get my hands on something now while I feel like I'm in limbo?

Sorry, I don't believe there's anything you can do immediately... I hope you're able to get another opinion, and some help. PJH

check out the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation's webiste - there is information there that may answer some of your questions and concerns.  I was diagnosed with triple negative in Oct. 2007, had mastectomy in Dec. '07, followed with chemo and radiation.  Doing well - no meds as of yet for the triple  negative -

Hi - Ask your oncolgist, but the usual treatment would be for you to take Herceptin for a year. Hope this helps - PJH
