Q: itchy nipple and breast pain..should i be worried?

about 4 months ago i developed a scaly itchy rash on my areola. it went away for a few weeks but when it returned i went to the docs. he gave me some cream and said if it came back just to self medicate with the cream and i didnt need to go back. the cream seemed to get rid of it..but it came back a few weeks later. now 4 months on,it seems to flare up just before my period each month. but now i get severe breast pain at the ame time, bad enough to wake me up at night and to hurt when going up or down stairs. and the itching is now more like a burning itch and my nipple gets so sore it hurts to even have clothes touch it. im not sure if the cream just seemed to clear it up or its actually just appearing and disappearing on its own as the symptoms seems to go after a week each time. should i be worried and going back to the doctor??

Hi - Since your regular doctor doesn't seem able to treat this successfully, I'd suggest you ask for a referral to a breast specialist. Please don't waste time and energy worrying; action is what gets results. Whatever this is - a skin issue, an allergy, a hormonal issue, possibly (though probably not) an early sign of breast cancer - you need to have it diagnosed and treated. So no more self-medicating; call your doctor and ask for the name of a breast specialist. Good luck - PJH
