Puffy under arm and solid mass in left breasts

susan campbell
10/22/08

I have noticed a puffy, sore, burning area under my left arm. Went for a Mammogram and Ultra sound and the Radiologists said...            Findings: There is a 1.1cm somewhat heterogeneous mass with some shadowing outter aspect of the breast most likely correlating to the lobulated mass seen in the mammography. In the left axilla is a 3.2cm heterogeneous mass that is rather indeterminate in its apperrance. Impression: Suspicious mass left breast. recommended biopsy, also would consider biopsy of the indertiminate mass in axillary region as they might be related. I am very nervous and have an appt. with surg. on Monday to talk about my options for biopsy. I am 44 years old and suffer from P.C.O.S. as well as Ulcerative Colitis. I am a White Female.

Susan, best to take this one step at a time. You noticed the puffiness/mass, and have had it examined, which is good; now you're going to have a biopsy, which may or may not be cancer. FYI, about 85% of biopsies are benign - not cancer. If it's not cancer, the doctors will work to find out what's causing the puffiness and pain, and treat it. If it is cancer — well, then you and your medical team will deal with that, too. You've started down a path whose destination you don't know, at the moment. As time goes by, you'll get a clearer picture of where you're headed. But know that wherever you go, you'll have the strength to handle it. Stay connected here - whatever this mass turns out to be, we can help. Good luck - PJH
