question about lymphedema

I had surgery last year for breast cancer and developed lymphedema about 2 months after the surgery. I was wondering if this will ever go away or will i have to continue to manage it with massage theraphy? Also i was told by my surgeon NOT to carry anything on the affected side or lift anything…
