Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, November 22, 2008 Dodie asks

Q: My 14 year old son has a hard pebble like bump behind his left nipple. Should I be concerned ?

I need to know if he should see a doctor or is this a part of boys puberty?  I have an older son and this did not happen to.  Breast cancer runs in my family for women but not the men.  I am deeply worried.  Please, if anyone has any help for me please write.

Dodie, since breast cancer runs in your family, your son is iindeed more at risk. However, considering fewer than 2,000 American men/year are diagnosed with breast cancer; and considering the youngest man ever diagnosed with breast csncer, from what my research shows, was 24 years old, I think what your son has in his breast is part of puberty. However, to set your mind at rest, why not take him to see his doctor? He'll probably protest, but it'll make you feel better. Good luck - PJH
