Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, September 06, 2009 moving on asks

Q: Anyone have advice on having hysterectomy, mastectomy, and breast enhancers in one operation?

Diagnosis Invasive Lobular Cacinoma. At least 5 tumors.

Procedure: Bilateral Mastectomy, Sentinel node procedure, Reconstruction w/breast expanders. Next step chemo then implants

HPV w/high grade squamons (HGSIL) on cervix.

Still menstrating at 53 yrs.

ER & PR 80-85%, so can't take the pill, for protection and for heavy bleeding and cramps all my life.

Can't find anyone who has done the da vinci with the breast surgery. Doctors said it might be possible, if the plastic surgeon feels it's safe.

WHOA, that's a lot of agressive surgery at one time. I guess you can look at it as getting it all over at once, but I'd certainly be prepared for a tough few weeks of recovery, with someone to pretty much wait on you hand and foot. Readers, anyone had this done? PJH

Even though a DaVinci hysterectomy will be easier than the traditional kind, it sounds like a lot to put your body through.  Before you can start your chemo, you will need to heal at four incision sites.  If anyone of those gets infected, your chemo will be delayed.  If your doctors are routinely combining these procedures with good results, then go with their advice.  If you will be their first combined surgery, then sit down with your doctors and make a list of risks and benefits of going through with all three at the same time versus doing them one at a time.  Maybe we will hear from someone who has done all three at once.

My Mom had a hysterectomy and a mastectomy in the same surgery with the option of the breast expanders. She choose not to go with the expanders at that time because it was very stressful for her. But now, 2 years later, she is wishing she had done it. I wanted her to do it but that has to be the patient/doctors choice. Her wonderful doctor just threw the idea out there as a possibility but left it up to her. It is alot of invasive surgery and there will be alot of soreness anyway. If it had been me, I would have done it all. But Mom was 60 years old at the time and I was 40. So pray about it and get all the facts from your doctor.

Sandy, your mom can certainly go back in and have reconstruction done any time; it didn't need to be done the same time as the mastectomy. Please let her know she doesn't have to regret her decision, because it can be retroactively changed. It's never too late! Take care- PJH
