Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Lump in breast

I am 43 years old had my first child when I was 26 and my second when I was 39. My first ever mammogram found a lump but the doctor couldn't feel it when I was 30 turned out to be a cyst. Recently during a self breast exam I found a lump and went to the doctors who referred me to s surgen at our local breast center she couldn't tell me much except it was better to have the surgeon check it out. I know its not common for breast cancer but I can't help but be worried cause usually she just sends me for my annual mammogram. Any thoughts should I be worried because I'm going to meet with the surgeon and he will decide what work we need to do.

Hi - Please try not to worry too much. The surgeon may want to do a biopsy, since you've had a lump before. But 85% of biopsies are benign. So the statistics are with you. Best to take any breast lump seriously and find out what it is; this will always result in a certain level of stress, but try to stay positive and believe you've got another cyst, or some other issue. Good luck - PJH
