Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, January 22, 2009 Mary asks

Q: I had IDC 11 years ago in my left breast. Had a lumpectomy and underwent chemo and radiation. Now

have Stage I, .8 cm tumor in right breast.  Estrogen/progesterone receptive, no apparent lymphovascular involvement.  Still waiting for HER2 results.  This is apparently a new primary cancer.  What information do I need to be weighing in coming to a decision regarding lumpectomy vs. double mastectomy, since I seem to have a propensity toward IDC?

Mary, please read our information on opting for a double mastectomy; and the pros and cons of double mastectomy. Also, check out the consequences of opting for a double mastectomy. I think all of these will help you make your decision about whether or not to have another lumpectomy, or to go for the double mastectomy. Clearly, there are plusses and minuses to either decision; and in the end, it's a decision only you can make, because you're the one who'll live with whatever you choose. Best of luck to you—I hope things go well. PJH
