Hi Elysha - Unexplained pain is always scary, but it's almost certainly not breast cancer - breast cancer is nearly always painless. Please read our post on breast pain to see what it might be due to. And good luck Friday - PJH

I disagree with this a lot!  I had breast pain and because I had heard that breast cancer was NOT painful, I was not worried at all.  I had great need to be worried - a week later I was diagnosed with stage 3 BC.

People need to stop the rumor that it is not painful.  BC can have pain!  This could cause a lot of people not to seek treatment when they need to seek it.

Carolyn, it's true that sometimes breast cancer lumps can be painful. And inflammatory breast cancer is more often painful than not. But IN GENERAL, when women experience a pain in their breast, it's almost always due to some other cause - not breast cancer.

The rule of thumb always applies: any breast change that lasts longer than one menstrual cycle should be checked by a doctor. But if you have a pain in your breast, you shouldn't automatically stress over it and assume it's cancer; because, though the possibility exists - as you discovered, unfortunately - statistically speaking, a pain in your breast probably stems from some cause other than cancer. - PJH

Breast cancer can be painful. I didn't think I had Breast Cancer because I had pain, it began as twinges and became more of a thumping, I knew something wasn't right. The Doc told me later the lump was close to the skin and I believe this is why I felt the pain. Go by instinct, I did and caught it early. Most important, feel where the pain is coming from and check for a lump. I am, however, postmenopausel.
