Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, June 05, 2008 Joy asks

Q: 41 year old, been taking premerain for 8 years, had a ratical hysterectomy at 33,

I had a radial Hysterectomy at 33, and I am now 41. I take 2 x .625mg Premerain tablet daily. My motherpassed away 5 years ago from Ovarian Cancer, my Grandmother passed away from Bowel cancer 2 years ago and my grand father 12 years ago from stomach cancer.

I am overweight and unfit. I have only had a couple of mamograms over the years as I am not old enough and am not allowed to have them unless I have symptoms.

I have very grainy breasts and have had one lump that ended up being fatty tissue and fluid was taken from it.

I also take Aropax daily for panic Attacks and anxiety.

What should I do now and where do I go to get advise on what to do next?

I live in Tamworth, NSW where medical treatments and testing facilities are pushed to the maximum.

Joy, though there's a history of cancer in your family, it's good it's not breast cancer - that's a plus. And, at age 41, you're old enough to warrant having a mammogram every two years, according to the accepted guidelines. Why not schedule yourself for a mammogram? Though your facilities are stressed, surely they'd get you in for one sometime. And ask to go over your risk factors with your primary care doctor, once the mammogram results are in. That way, you get a baseline mammogram; and you start the dialogue with your PCP. Good luck - PJH
