Susan, if you've had this itching and redness for a long time, it's doubtful it would be breast cancer. However, if it's recent - like within the past weeks or couple of months - then definitely consult your doctor. Itching and redness can be signs of a rare type of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer. It's very unlikely that this is what's causing your symptoms, but you'd still want to have it checked out.
If your breast has been itching for many months, then I'd suggest getting a referral to a breast specialist. In the meantime, please read our post on itchy breasts. Good luck - PJH
Susan, I'm a little unclear on when your doctor told you that you had a cyst. If that's what your doctor said about what the MRI showed, then you can trust that it was a harmless cyst. However, if you have had changes in the itching and redness in the last two years, you need to see the doctor again. If your doctor is telling you that you have a cyst based on a physical exam and not an imaging test, like an ultrasound or MRI, then you need to consult with another doctor. Although cysts usually do feel different than cancerous lumps, your doctor cannot tell for certain just by a physical examination.
