Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, January 15, 2010 Lillie asks

Q: I am a 53y old female diagnosed with breast cancer and uninsured.

I have no insurance and I would like to know if under these circumstances I can qualify for it? My savings are almost gone. I lost my job 7 mo ago. Does anybody have been in this situation and had assistance. I am afraid that the delay make a huge difference in my treatment and recovery? Do I have hope?

Lillie, the way that our current insurance system works, people have to start paying into it while they are healthy to get the benefits when they get sick.  Since you and/or your employer were probably paying into a health insurance plan before you lost your job, it doesn't seem fair that you would now be uninsurable for individual insurance because of your breast cancer diagnosis.

However, there are programs for people in your situation.  The doctor who diagnosed your breast cancer should have helped connect you to your best local resources for helping you with your medical expenses.  Start with that doctor's office and ask who you should contact locally.  If they are not helpful, contact the social worker at the hospital where you would like to be treated.  She should be able to assess what kinds of programs you might be eligible for.

I also had no job or insurance when I was diagnosed. Ther is a program for you. talk to the social worker at the hospital near you to see if you can get medicaid under the breast and cervical cancer program in your area. That's how I quailfied for treatment.
