Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, June 30, 2008 Donna asks

Q: Left breast hurts, especially under the arm and around nipple.

I have never had any problem with my breast.  Except they are 44EE.  My left breast has been bothering me for about 3 weeks now.  It is especially sore under my arm pit and around the bottom and the bottom of the areola.  If I try to sleep on my stomach I have to position it where it doesn't hurt when I first lay down. I had an ultrasound and they saw no problems.  I have yearly mammograms.  I am 48 had a complete hysterectomy in 2004- no problems since.  I use a hormone patch and change it twice a week- no changes in medications.

Donna, pain is very rarely a sign of breast cancer. Unless your breast is also red, swollen, and feels hot (looks/feels like an infection), the pain is probably due to something else. In big-breasted women such as yourself, mammograms are VERY effective in picking up any issues. So as long as you've had a fairly recent mammogram, and it shows no problem, and the ultrasound is clear, I'd assume the pain is from something else. It sounds like it's bothering you quite a bit, so I'd keep on the doctor till (s)he figures out what's going on and helps you fix it! Good luck - PJH

Donna I'm so sorry to hear about your pain.  It doesn't sound like cancer, but it does sound like something is bothering you and you need to get to the bottom of it till the pain is gone or you know what's causing it.

While breast cnacer in general isn't painful, sometimes - and I do mean sometimes, a LUMP can be slightly painful, and I say that from my own personal experience, which could mean that it only hurt because I was constantly felling it, grabbing it, trying to see if it wiggled, and doing other things that probably caused the pain.

I wish I had some magical answer as to what's causing your problems - pain in general could be from anything, but don't stop to you get answers you are satisified with.  And hopefully this pain will go away and end up being nothing at all.  but if you ever have any more questions, feel free to check in and let us know!

Good Luck!
