Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, November 12, 2010 Clara asks

Q: I've been having pain in my right breast every month sinced I weaned my 2 year old.

I've been having pain in my right breast since weaning.  I weaned my child 3 months ago and at the end of each period, my right breast begins to hurt.  The pain subsides after about two weeks but then starts again after the next period.  I can't tell if there are any serious lumps (nothing hard or obvious) although it does feel "lumpy".  The other breast is fine and doesn't hurt at all.  The painful breast is also smaller- if that makes any difference- but has been since nursing my first child.  What could this be?  Should I be concerned?  I'm due to see my gyn this month.  Thanks

Clara, I'd say just bring it up with your gynecologist. Pain that comes and goes in synch with your period is almost always hormone-related; breast cancer is seldom painful, and if it is, the pain doesn't come and go on a regular schedule. I'm guessing you've got some fibrocystic change going on, which isn't unusual in women your age, and has the symptoms you describe. But do bring it up at your next appointment. Good luck - PJH

Try to express just enough to get relief from the pressure a few times a day. And do the same from the one that doesn't give pressure. Keep expressing a little less everyday. The idea is to let the breasts get used to not being touched.  It is a journey for the breasts to begin to become as they were prior to pregnancy, they have taken a beating- no matter how wonderful the process was!Smile

If you feel a very hard, pebble like lump- that could be a reason to be alarmed. But even then; if your are nursing or weaning, that makes a difference and it could be normal. It is not serious with nursing mothers, but it is with women who are not nursing, If you had recently been nursing it is probably not serious. Just check with your doctor. However, anytime you feel a hard lump that feels so hard that you cannot massage it out- call your doctor immediately.

Just worry about lumps that feel like hard stones. Those are to worry about; otherwise they are probably nothing. Keep in mind that a woman's body is always changing, and even though changes are disconcerting, they are normal.Smile
