Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, April 29, 2012 Vikki asks

Q: radiologist sees a round mass with a strange edge pattern

If a radiologist sees a round mass with a strange edge pattern, (when she drew it, looked like an asteroid with a tail). Can a non-cancerous mass also have rough edges? She also mentioned that there were lines in it. Can anyone help me in this description? It was suggested to have a biopsy because she told me she would suggest that to her own female family members. Should I be scared? Thank you for any help.

Vikki, the shape of a suspicious mass can't really identify whether or not it's cancerous. Cancerous masses can be completely round and smooth, like a cyst; they can also have ragged edges such as you describe. Benign tumors and other benign breast conditions follow the same pattern: they can be smooth and round or elongated; or irregularly shaped. Thus your radiologist's suggestion you have a biopsy, because only a biopsy can rule out cancer for sure.

Should you be scared? No. Fear doesn't accomplish anything; it simply makes you feel bad. Action is the way to get past fear, so I suggest you schedule your biopsy and get it over with as quickly as possible, so you can move forward - whatever the diagnosis. Be advised that about 85% of breast biopsies are negative; no cancer. So the odds are definitely on your side. Best of luck - I hope your biopsy brings good news. PJH
