Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, March 11, 2010 tazama asks

Q: I am 48 yrs old with left breast pain

I am 48, had a hysterectomy approx 8 to 10 yrs ago, recently (within the past 5 to 6 months) I've had pain in my left breast. It comes and goes, some days worse than others. Right now it hurts to touch (I watch my grandson and picking him up and him leaning on my breast hurts) but isn't hot or swollen. I have never had a mammogram (I don't have insurance and can't afford to pay for one or a doctor's visit). Cancer runs in my family (mother had ovarian, grandmother had ovarian, and my younger sister right now is dealing with breast issues and just had a gene test to see if she has the cancer cells. What should I do and where can I get some help in a mammogram?

Hi - Please read our post on mammograms for underserved women . At your age, you absolutely should have a mammogram, as a baseline, if nothing else; and this post will give you the information you need to get one free, or at very low cost. Good luck - PJH
