Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: bleeding nipple and cyst found in armpit area

My best friend had bleeding from the left breast, and then a cyst in the armpit area was found during her mammogram. The doctor is being quite vague and is talking about it being indicative of a "different" kind of cancer. Any idea what this means? I'm 1200 miles away going crazy.

One type of cancer that affects the nipple is called Paget's Disease of the Breast.  It is usually considered highly treatable.  I'm sure there are other possibilities as well, but that one come immediately to mind.  The most important question is what is being done to complete the diagnosis.  Has a biopsy been scheduled?  I know it's hard to be far away from a friend during a health crisis.  I've been in the same situation as both patient and concerned friend.  I'm sure she would appreciate a phone call.  Then take her cues as to how much she wants to talk about her health.

Hi - There are many reasons behind nipple discharge, the vast majority of which don't involve breast cancer. I think the doctor might be "ruminating" about Paget's disease, but even that has many symptoms—only one of which might be discharge. And in addition, it's SO rare, and wouldn't be connected to the cyst. Please read our post on nipple discharge; maybe it'll help you advise your friend, and perhaps lower your own stress level, too. Good luck - PJH
