Q: burning pain in breast

Hello, I have , over the last month, experienced and sharp pain accompanied with a horendous burnning in my right breast. It is upper right area and the pain is sooo bad it wakes me up at night in tears. What could this be ? I am no longer child bearing, 40 years old, and no implants.. I have never experienced anything like this before. I had a hysterectomy when I was thirty due to a cancerous tumor on my uterus also.

Hi Michele - This sounds like it could be a hormonal or nerve issue of some kind. Breast cancer generally begins with a lump, not pain, especially not the kind of pain you describe. However, since you've been suffering with this for a month now, it definitely qualifies as a breast change - one that you should share with your doctor. So call and make an appointment, OK? Hopefully you'll be able to get some relief soon. Good luck - PJH

Michele, pain can be an early symptom of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) although typically IBC patients quickly also develop swelling, redness and skin dimpling.  Pain at the level you describe that has lasted so long definitely needs to be checked out.  In addition to the causes PJ mentioned and IBC, you might have some sort of infection.
