I have had discomfort on the left side of my left breast for 9 months.  This discomfort recently spread under/into armpit.  Recent mammogram found microcalcification cluster.  They say it's non-related.  After a lumpectomy I was diagnosed with DCIS.  Lumpectomy was successful with clean margins/stage 0.  Currently in the process of determining best form of treatment, radiation/ hormone therapy.  Meeting with Radiologist Onocologist Friday, and Medical Oncologist next Wed.  I had an MRI today to double check for any other "scattered cancer cells" that the mammogram may have missed. My question... Should I be concerned about my lymph nodes?  What is the test used to test lymph nodes? I realize DCIS is non-invasive, however it seams quite suspicious for the discomfort to be on same side.  Not to mention my level of anxiety at this point!

Hi Amy - If it's DCIS, then by definition it can't have spread to your lymph nodes; DCIS means the cancer is absolutely contained within the ducts. You should tell your oncologist when you see him next week about your uneasiness about it being in your lymph nodes; he/she can explain how they determine that it's not, and set your mind at ease. The only possibility would be another undetected tumor that's invasive, and that's spread; so ask your oncologist how that's been ruled out, too, OK? Good luck - and stay in touch here. We can help as you make your way through treatment. - PJH
