Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, December 08, 2008 Jennifer asks

Q: My breast has been itching on and off for the past month, and now there's a rash.. suggestions?

There is a one white-head type bump [size of a pin head] on the upper portion of the rash. I don't know if I should go to a OB/GYN.. a GP.. or a dermatologist. I've been reading about inflammatory breast cancer, and afraid I'm scaring myself. I need some help on which way to go.

Jennifer, remember that IBC is VERY rare, so don't stress too much. Have you started using a new laundry detergent or body gel? Fabric softener? Eating something different, or anything else that might give you a rash? If the rash progressively worsens, I'd say go to the doctor and ask what it might be. If (s)he doesn't mention IBC, bring it up yourself. Good to put it on the table, at least. Good luck - PJH

Jennifer, since your symptoms are progressing, it's time to check in with your doctor.  I'd suggest starting with the one that you have the best relationship with.  If a good doctor doesn't know what you have, she'll refer you to the right specialist.  The itching I had as an early inflammatory breast cancer symptom was intense and deep within my breast.  Usually inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) presents with a combination of swelling, redness, and pain or itching.  The breast may feel warm, and the skin may be pitted like the skin of an orange.  Most rashes on the breast are not IBC, so it's too early to panic.  PJ's suggestions about possible causes are much more likely than cancer.  Be persistent with getting a diagnosis.  Let us know what you find out.

I have a friend who had IBC. The only way to diagnosis it is with a punch biopsy. IBC is rare, if your symptoms don't go away, insist on a punch biopsy.  Your MD may have never seen a case of IBC. Hopefully and most likely you do not have IBC, but it is good to be proactive in your health.
