Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Q: Second opinion on removing marker and area seen on mammogram that can't be felt?

I am having a stereotactic biopsy done tomorrow. They will leave in a marker. Even if the results are completely negative, I would prefer to have the marker and area removed. The area is viewable on a mammogram, but can't be felt. The General Surgeon says it's difficult to remove an area that can't be felt. I am wondering I should get a second opinion and if a surgeon that specializes breast issues would be better qualified for removing an area that can't be felt. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I am located in MA near Boston if you have any suggestions.

Thank you!

Hi - First of all, the Lahey Clinic or Dana-Farber are both great options near you.

Next, I would hope the person doing the biopsy is an oncological radiologist. They're very experienced in breast biopsies, and would have no trouble finding an area that can't be felt, but is only visible on a mammogram. So if you have the opportunity to not rush into this, and to get a referral to someone who specializes in breast biopsies, I'd definitely do it. And I do think you have time - about 85% of breast biopsies are negative. And even if your biopsy is positive, breast cancer is usually one of the slower-growing cancers. Good luck - PJH
