Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 teacups asks

Q: nipple and just above the areola itch so intensly, no other symptom,

my mother died of ovarian cancer and my daughter had non hodgkins lymphoma at the age of 14 so naturally the thought of cancer is in the back of my mind. When they itch bad enough the areola will wrinkle up but only on the top part of the areola. There is no other symptoms no dry skin or flaking.

Hi - You don't say if this affects both breasts, or just one, nor how long it's been going on. If it affects both breasts, it's almost certainly an allergy, or a hormonal issue. Breast cancer would only rarely present symptoms in both breasts at once. While itching can be a sign of some very rare forms of breast cancer - Paget's disease, and inflammatory breast cancer - both would get worse fairly quickly. So if this has been going on for awhile, I'd check with a dermatologist. If it's just started - have you changed your shower gel or laundry detergent? Bought a new bra? Keep track of it; if it lasts longer than a few weeks, might as well see a doctor and get it diagnosed and treated, OK? Sounds very annoying! Good luck - PJH

Yes it is in both breasts. I have done all the checking for new or different clothes and or products that would touch the body. I am not too concerned as that was my first thought why both of them. Thank you for your time and comment and I will moniter the situation close.
