Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sunday, November 27, 2011 Len asks

Q: A large rash with red marks under the skinand discolored areas is on both my breasts and itches badly. I do have exzema, but the rash doesn't extend beyond my breasts. I am not pregnant. Can you help?

I am sixteen years old. A large rash has appeared very suddenly ("overnight", one could say) on both my breasts and itches badly. The rash includes red marks that are seemingly under the skin and discolored areas (red or brownish). However, my nipples do not itch. I do have exzema, but I have never seen this type of rash before and exzema rashes usually appear on my arms. I am not pregnant. In researching early breast cancer symptoms, rash appeared as a possible indicator, though not a prominent one. Should I be concerned?

Len, considering your age, your description of what it looks like, and the fact that it's on both breasts -  this doesn't soiund at all like a breast cancer symptom. It does, however, sound like a seirous reaction to something. My advice would be to see your doctor ASAP, if it doens't disappear overnight. In the meantime, you might try an antihistamine (Claritin, etc.), if you don't have any underlying conditions that would prevent you taking that type of over-the-counter drug. Good luck - PJH

Think about any changes in skin care products, laundry detergent or type of bra you may have had recently.  Although this is not likely to be cancer, you will want to check with a doctor if changing to a soft bra made from cotton or other natural fibers and switching to laundry and skin care products designed for sensitive skin don't clear it up quickly.  Let your mom or other adult know about this.  It's great that you are paying attention to your health and independent enough to do some research on your own, but an adult who knows your whole health history is the best person to evaluate whether you need to see a doctor.  I hope the rash clears up soon.
