Malignant Lump Plus Enlarged Lymph Node

BBinFL
10/25/08

I was just diagnosed by mammo and ultrasound with a small (8mm) breast lump that appears to be malignant. (Needle biopsy is scheduled for next week.) I also have had soreness near that armpit for a couple of months, and the doctor was able to feel an enlarged lymph node. Does this indicate that the cancer has probably spread to this lymph node?

(The ultrasound report says that “survey views of the… axilla are negative for any suspicious lymph nodes with single benign appearing lymph node in the deep axilla.” That sounds reassuring, but I don’t know how much the ultrasound can really pick up.)

Hi BB: "Appears to be malignant" is making a big jump; nothing is for sure till they do that biopsy, so take it one step at a time, OK? You're following the right path, being diligent about checking out changes in your breast. As for your enlarged lymph node, it could be an infection; with just an 8mm (very tiny) questionable area in your breast, it's another big jump to think it might have spread already. And breast cancer is nearly always painless. So again, one step at a time. Good luck and I hope you get good results - PJH
