why can a mammo show something and an ultrasound not ? what is the next step?
had mammo 6 mo. ago- found "somthing" - watched it , 6 mo. call back shows its a little bigger now so they do ultrasound and find nothing - how can something be visible on mammogram and not ultrasound ? what is the next step to do ? They said maybe breast MRI ??
Hi Angie - from my experience the ultrasound is used essentially to determine if a lump is fluid filled or solid. I would think that if they cannot find it on an ultrasound, it may just be because it is deep within your breast tissue.
A MRI, PET Scan , or Breast CT or CAT Scan are often other tools used in finding lumps. Sometimes the do one, sometimes they do ALL - which can be a pain, but at least it gives them a view from every angle and lets you know what to expect.
Good luck to you figuring out what that lump is!

Hi Angie - Sometimes a fluid-filled cyst shows up on a mammogram, but not on an ultrasound. So it may just be a cyst. I would just follow the recommendations of whoever you're seeing - clearly if they know enough to follow a questionable mammogram with an ultrasound, they also know the next step. Best wishes - PJH
