Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 claire asks

Q: why is that when they already know that I have IDC, they are still waiting for the result of the PET

I was dx already of having IDC,md told me that they will do chemo but waiting to have the result of the PET before the tx. Is this the normal process or can they tx me without the PET. Had mammogram and US guided bx (got the dx from the result of the bx). Thanks

Claire, a PET scan is a very sophisticated way to search for cancer cells. Most likely the doctor is trying to see if the cancer has spread to your lymph nodes, as this may guide him in the type of chemotherapy you get. Or he may be trying to see if there are any other areas in your breast that need to be looked at. Either way, he's no doubt recommended the procedure for a good reason - I'm sure he's going to use the info. to finalize your treatment plan. Patience - and good luck. PJH

I just had a PET, and Chest CT because my doc found a recureence in my chest wall 3 yrs after my first dx of cancer.  I was told that those test will give them a better picture of if it has spread, how much area is affected, and it is very precise in doing it all rather than just cutting you open blind.  Now that the doc has the info she needed I go into surgery tomorrow to have a bit more of my mucle removed.

It took a bit longer, but it gives her a better idea of what to expect and overall means better care for me - so I assume the same for you.  You deserve the best care you can get and it sounds as though your doctor is doing it.  I was never given this offer the first time around.  It could have saved me SO much.  That's why I find so much importance in being confident and comfortable with your doctor.

I hope all goes well for you.  Please keep us posted!
