why is that when they already know that I have IDC, they are still waiting for the result of the PET

I was dx already of having IDC,md told me that they will do chemo but waiting to have the result of the PET before the tx. Is this the normal process or can they tx me without the PET. Had mammogram and US guided bx (got the dx from the result of the bx). Thanks
