Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, August 26, 2010 Kathy asks

Q: After mastectomy with expander, I developed cellulitis. Expander removed. I completed chemo but have hard large area where breast removed. Is this a common side effect? No evidence of infection.

The cellulitis resolved after 4 weeks of multiple antibiotics. It looks like I have already completed my reconstruction work, but it really has not begun since the expander was removed in May.

Kathy, what does your surgeon say this is? It could be scar tissue; other than that, I wouldn't know. I'd suggest your speak to your surgeon, and find out what testing can be done to diagnose this. Good luck - PJH

Did you have radiation?  Radiation can make the skin hard.  I'm not familiar with that as a chemo side effect.  PJ's suggestion that it is scar tissue sounds very likely.  Checking in with your doctor is your best bet to make sure that this is within the range of normal post-surgery reactions.
