Q: palpable lump not showing on sono??

I found this mushy palpable lump in my right breast so i went to my obgyn who referred me to have a sono done. The lump is very painful right before my period and swells up, once i get my period the pain goes away but the lump stays. I went for the sono and nothing showed up in my right breast, instead they found a fibroadenoma in my left breast which i had biopsied and came back benign. The dr. now has me going to see a breast surgeon to make sure this lump that isnt showing is ok. Im freaked out to say the least. Any answers?

Since the lump changes in synch with your period, and they can't see it (typical of a cyst), it sounds very much like a harmless (though painful) cyst. The surgeon can withdraw fluid from the area in question to ascertain that it's a cyst, as well as to provide you with some relief. Please don't stress; I'm betting in a few weeks this will all be behind you. Good luck - PJH
