Hi - Please take a look at our breast cancer symptoms page for all kinds of helpful information. Breast cancer often begins with a lump, though not always. Still, a lump in the breast is usually NOT breast cancer, though all lumps should be checked. Hope this helps - PJH
My Breast Cancer FIRST time 1996, was missed. I had chafing around the edge of my nipple, and then noticed a sepage from my nipple while vacuuming braless. I reported this chafing to the dr. I was given cream, they had no explanation for the sepage...it looked like breast milk ( 2 years prior I breast feed) I HAD HAP INSURANCE. The dr are paid not to "refer out" I was never referred out, treated for the chaffing, told I should wash my bras better? Change my soap, rinse better? In 1998 I told my neighbor who was a doctor, the next day I had a mammogram Oct 1998, 24 hours later I had suspect results of DCIS(Ductal Carcinoma In Situ) My breast was filled with calcifications, resulting in a Necessary Mastectomy.
MY SECOND BREAST CANCER-Breast exam in Oct.2004-missed lump. On 10.30.04 I felt something in my upper right arm-right below the pit-it was a small lump. My mamogram was scheduled for 11/9, they couldnt see it, I insisted on an Ultrasound, it was visible. A month lator(thinking no news is good news - I'll NEVER WAIT THAT LONG AGAIN) A LETTER that came in the mail said it was a lymph node. Well by 1/7/05 it had grown twice the size. I INSISTED IT BE REMOVED. MY DOCTOR SAID IT WAS NOTHING to worry about & I WAS WORRYING TOO MUCH. (prev cancer _ I think NOT!) Well I demanded it be removed- I NEVER had a lump there or ever, yet one that lasted twoyrs. The dr. missed part of the tumor that was mutating in two. I fired her, went to Karmanos, Detoit, Had Dr. Beauman/Dr Vatikevicus, Karmanos Pioneerwho took my case, they removed the rest, and began a rigourous plan of Aggressive Chemotherapy/Radiation from March until Nov 2005. EARLY DETECTION - TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. I SINCE HAVE Fibromaygia from trama to the body, took 4 years for proper diagnosis, its getting worse this past year, debilitating. I sufferered a heart attack from predispostion genitically and the Adrimyacin/Cytoxan combo... And then some

Denise, your story is a good example of how women often know when something is wrong before their doctors (and sometimes despite their doctors). I'm glad you finally found the doctors who were right for you. Thanks for sharing your story of how important it is to speak up and be assertive with doctors who seem to dismiss symptoms.
