Q: have a lump in breast that is extremely painful... It has been ther oh..4 years or so..Have fibercystic brests.....Anything i can do to lessen pain?

Renee, if you're sure this is fibrocystic pain, then how about asking your doctor about surgery? If it's one particular lump, you should be able to have it removed. If you want to avoid surgery, your OB/GYN may be able to recommend a change in diet - e.g., cutting out caffeine, which sometimes seems to help. At any rate, if your family doctor can't help, ask for a referral to a breast specialist, OK? That would be the doctor most likely to be able to help. Best of luck - PJH

Renee, if an ultrasound shows the lump is filled with fluid, it can be drained.  I had this procedure done several times while I was in my 40's and prone to cysts.  A surgeon can drain a cyst in his office with local anesthetic, and for me that took care of the problem for months before a new cyst would become troublesome and painful again.
