Q: What's the most common reason for a woman to find a lump or have swelling that doesn't change?

Iam 26 and I had some swelling under my left arm that I noticed first. It felt like I had a sock or thick pad under my arm.A week or so later I got a very intense pain under my left nipple there I found a lump.I went to the doc and had an ultasound it came back okay they found nothing. That was in October.I was put on an antibiotic to make sure it wasn't an infection in the duct. The antibiotic didn't do anything. The pain comes and goes as it wants and the swelling and lump are still the same.I've become accustomed to the changes in my breast so they aren't as bothersome as they were in the beginning but I know they are there. Now I've noticed that I'm having discomfort and swelling in my upper chest on the left side.I haven't had anything going on in my right breast.I just wanted to know if it were fatty tissue wouldn't it be happening on both sides? My left breast isn't any bigger than the right. So why can you feel the lump and see the swelling but the ultrasound didn't show anything? It makes me feel like Iam crying WOLF!!!

Hi - At your age it would be unusual to have breast cancer. Much more likely it's fibrocystic changes—naturally lumpy breasts. And breast pain is very rarely a breast cancer symptom. Still, a lump that appears and then remains shouldn't be ignored. And clearly it's stressing you. Your next step should be to ask for a mammogram. Even if insurance won't pay for it, it'll probably cost under $100, and if that comes back negative, you'd feel much more secure, I assume. So call your GP, and say you're being emotioanlly stressed by this lump, and ask for a mammogram, OK? Good luck - PJH
