Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, December 30, 2009 Ann Phillips asks

Q: I'm 24, I had a lump in my armpit about 6 cm from my nipple, so I went to the doctor.

My right breast has been extremely tender. The nurse who did the sonogram find a small lump near the nipple. She looked at the lump I found in my arm pit and said it looked like a swollen lymph node. My doctors wants me have them both biopsied. I'm going to, but right now I'm just really upset. Are there any other reasons besides breast cancer that would cause my symptoms, especially the breast pain? I scared because everything I've read says that normally only advanced breast cancer hurts.

Ann, take a deep breath.  I'm sure that you will have some anxiety until you have the biopsy and get the report back; however, more than 80% of lumps that need to biopsied turn out to be benign.  It's good that your medical team is being cautious and following up to find out exactly what kind of lumps these are.  Let us know what the biopsy shows.  I hope you get good news.
