Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 Terry asks

Q: Can taking 100MG prometrium daily for the last 7-8 mos cause breast cancer?

I have a history of fibrocystic breast tissue and was not aware that I had a lump until my doctor found it.  The mammo can back normal; but the ultrasound verified a cyst.  I was referred to a surgeon who performed a fine needle aspiration biopsy.  He was not satisfied that it was fluid filled, because he did an office ultrasound to look at it afterward.  The lab report came back with conflicting statements "suspicious for malignancy" and "fibrocystic changes".  The surgeon verified with the pathologist which it was and was told that it was a transcription error and that the biopsy confirmed "fibrocystic changes".  The surgeon rechecked the lump to confirm if it was still there which it was but maybe smaller.  I am to return for a recheck in 6-8 weeks.  Should I be concerned that it is more than fibrocystic changes?

Terry, taking Prometrium doesn't cause cancer. Prometrium, like any hormone replacement drug, can increase your risk; but it's not a direct cause.

If the radiologist says there was a transcription error, might as well believe him, eh? Go back in 6-8 weeks to double check, but in the meantime, try not to worry. If there's one thing we can control in our life, it's our own attitude. Choose to be positive; in the long run, you'll feel a whole lot better.

Good luck - PJH
